GRANDPERSPECTIVE MISCELANEOUS USED SPACE PRO
I'm going to leave out programs such as the Adobe suite, Vegas Pro (all of which I use daily) and the likes because they're just too expensive.
GRANDPERSPECTIVE MISCELANEOUS USED SPACE INSTALL
I have quite a few programs I always install right away when I'm setting up a new computer.

I do mostly hand cleanings these days using that but my use is really focused in on a particular software title for licensing so I'm only doing reg surgery on a key or two. It also allows hive selection and a go to option so you don't have to dick around in the reg editor too much. With the job I do now we have to find registry entries for various reasons and this thing will spit out searches like you wouldn't believe. What I do like is RegScanner from Nirsoft. I've also lost program associations and had my desktop icons reset and other random oddness which is why I avoid those these days. Back in the day I had to export certain chunks of Autocad's regkeys so I could reimport them after a reg cleaning. The issues I've personally had with reg cleaners in general is that they can sometimes wipe out keys that are required. That said, now that I do app admin for a lot of different software I see more of the negatives of reg cleaners than I did doing desktop support so I personally don't encourage them. I don't think it was ever updated past XP though so I had to quit using it and now I don't know the name. There was a really nice reg cleaner I used to use, can't remember the name, but it really cleaned shit out.a bit too well. I've just gotten down to using the absolute minimum so stuff like that went by the wayside.

Plus ccleaner was compromised to some degree and I'm not into dealing with issues from that kind of thing. Maybe but all I cared about it doing was cleaning temp files so I just whipped up a script of my own. Very useful for finding differences between two folders, two text files etc. Paint.Net - easy to use image editor, GIMP is more feature filled but takes longer to get a hang of.īeyond Compare - file comparison tool. Infranview - good for bulk image processing (resize / rename etc.) Handbrake - video encoder, very good at converting DVDs to MKV/MP4 Pngquant - a lossy png compressor that can achieve 70% reductions in file sizeĪutoHotKey - create macros to automate software / key bindings WinDirStat - for finding what files/folders are taking up space on your hard drive WinSCP - SCP client for connecting to linux boxes Notepad++ - good all around Notepad replacement with syntax highlighting and an FTP plugin

KeePass - secure password storage, if you don't trust cloud based providers, this one is a no-frills desktop based option. Papercut - local smtp server, great for development work when you want to test sending emails Worked great to convert FLAC to ALAC and vice versa. Some additional shots from Disk Utility to help diagnosis.DBpowerAMP is worth paying for as a music format converter. I think it only backs up when that drive is plugged in, but maybe it is writing to 'other' The reason I mention this is that Disk Xray Lite also seems confused about disk space, claiming I have used 536GB, presumably because it has counted System > Volumes > Data > Users as well as Users, despite them appearing to be the same thing.Ģ: I replaced ~/Library/Application Support/Mobile Sync/Backup with an Alias that is to an external drive. It may be just me misinterpreting the read out, or poor interface design on Apple's part. Something curious but possibly unrelated thingsġ: the disk drive has that second partition "- Data" and it is listed as 500GB too. I've tried tmutil listlocalsnapshots / but nothing shows up. I know I should have loads of space because I moved my Photos library to an external disk and I was sitting at over 100GB at that point, but in the months since then it has ticked away. OmniDiskSweeper just counts what is there, but GrandPerspective shows 191GB of "Miscellaneous used space" (big grey box on the side) and System Profiler lists it as 'Other'. I have OS X 10.15.7 running on a 500GB SSD and OmniDiskSweeper, GrandPerspective and System Information show that I have used about 270GB but only have about 30GB free.
